How to create more dynamic and interesting product photos

Finding ways to add interest to your product photography can sometimes feel like staring at a blank document with a blinking cursor and zero ideas.

Luckily, there are plenty of techniques to add interest to your product photography.

In this post I’ll be sharing 5 compositional rules that can help you create more dynamic images to highlight your products.

5 composition techniques to add interest to your photography

1. Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is when you think of your image as having a tic-toc-toe board on it and then placing your subject on the lines or intersecting points.

2. Rule of odds

The rule of odds is all about grouping your subjects together in odd numbers. Our eyes will naturally fall to the item positioned in the middle, so you can use that to your advantage and place your key product in the center of two supporting props or other products.

3. Negative Space

Negative space is empty space in your shot that doesn’t have props or product in it. Ig gives the viewer visual room to breathe as well as gives your product room to shine.

4. Creating Depth

Creating depth in your product photos is when your product is in focus and your background is more out of focus. This helps separate your product from the background so it stands out more without it having to be on a plain backdrop. You can totally use this technique on a neutral backdrop as well, it works perfectly for those shots with a few prop elements up against the backdrop while your product or subject is closer to the camera.

5. Diagonal compositions

Diagonal compositions are created by placing important elements along a diagonal line. Or placing props along a diagonal line with your product in the corner or center. You’ll see this used often in product photography because it uses one of the strongest elements of design: lines. The lines are used to draw the viewers eye toward your subject or product.
